Not Yet Time

Hey everybody,

Just posting to say that my sketches will hopefully be up before 6 today. Its been a pretty ca-razy weekend with finishing recording my band's cd/ other band needs, and the fashion show all at the same time. So not enough time has yet been devoted to the sketches to show something i'm happy with. But if they're not up before 6p.m. they will be up later in the night due to the fact that my band is putting on a show. If anyone is interested its at the Charm City Art Space, at 6, for $6. A good ammount of good bands are playing.

On a similarly different note, I modeled in the fashion show this weekend. Which was hours of preperation for about 9 seconds of work. Kind of grr when it first hits you in the dressing room, but an awesome time overall. Did anyone go/get any good pictures of my sexy-face? It'd be pretty swell if i could get one.

And all the sketches that are up right now look rather neato. I have Amy Lee for my trend, and got to pick her brain a little about the clothes shes into. The working title is: The Thrift. I'm pretty excited to draw some sexy Carhart jackets with ghetto hoops and silvery bangles.

Hey guys,

So we will be looking at the sketches for your new Trend assignment. Just to clarify, I would like an 8"10" assignment, but I would like you to work at least half up. So I am really asking you to work at least 12"x15". Please name your trend and have references for things that support this trend. ( ex: pictures of shoes, clothes, products )

We will be having 2 models on Monday, a guy and a girl, to make up for our lost model day last monday.

So again I will be asking you to bring the same drawing tools as last time.

get a friend to wear her/his favorite outfit and take a picture of them in a STANDING pose. Draw from the elements of the outfit to create style sheet for that particular look!

things for the outfit that make it fun and interesting:
-BAGS and accesories like JEWELRY, EARRINGS, WATCHES
-fun shoes
-accent pieces like socks or layers (layers being sweaters, coats, jackets, socks, anything on top of anything else)
-color v. pattern.

if you take your own picture of a friend, just make sure that you bring it on Monday and Kris sees it (along with the rest of us.)

the guidlines are to create a style sheet for a new fashion trend based off your photograph and using existing products. They can be from anywhere, from Target, to Dior. Look at some of the style sheets in Vogue or Nylon for inspiration on layout, and come up with a fitting name for your "look."

Hi guys, I'm sorry that I missed class last week, but I was feeling pretty sick. Tyler and Becca told me the next assignment, but I just now realized that I need to figure out how I can get ahold of one of those pictures of us so that I can actually start sketching. Hey Guys,

I can't wait to see your finals Monday.

We will have a model that day after we look at all the Finals. So I will need you to bring the following:

- large pad of drawing paper ( not newsprint ) large meaning more or less the size of your torso.
- a large brush to do a wash
- some kind of ink or paint ( black or a color you like, FW acrylic ink is my boyfriend )
- something to draw with that will make a bold mark ( crowquill, brushes, soft pencil )
- and for fun...white paint

The model is not through the school, she's my own model with great clothes so I would really appreciate it if you took full advantage of this prime drawing situation.

Again I can't wait to see these Finals.

Hey Guys,

The stuff you guys have been posting so far looks great and I look foward to seeing them all in class.

Here are some examples of the Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, and Marc Jacobs campaigns that inspired this assignment.

Please use either the Spring 07 collections or the Fall 07 collections. Again the goal is to not only do a portrait but to reflect the current trends in fashion. So it should be a lot of research and drawing.

So on Monday I look foward to seeing your sketches and reference. The final should be at least 8"x10". Please work at least to size.

Please remember to wear your favorite clothes on Monday, it doesn't matter what they are as long as you really like them.

Oh and be prepared to draw.

I received Yohji Yamamoto and Prince, and here's my sketches. I apologize for being late with them; yesterday blogger just wasn't loading and then I fell asleep. I posted them here as soon as I woke up. As for the sketches, I'm strongly leaning towards the red jacket outfit (I feel like it fits his personality well), but I don't know if the pose I drew him in there works ok. It's a bit boring, but I tried to look at TONS of Prince photo's to get some poses down. I was thinking about maybe drawing the red jacket on the guitar playing pose? We'll see. Any advice would be much appreciated, as always. =)

here are some of my rough sketches for dolly parton/ chanel. Dolly generally wears low necklines and has outfits that are borderline tacky... so I put some Spring 2007 chanel couture on her. I did some sketches with the clothes on her existing poses.

I'm not sure if I'm going in the right direction with the assignment... to get myself thinking, I replaced the clothing she had on in her photos with the chanel clothes. I don't know if I should go further in that direction or what.

I have grace jones who is amazingly scary but very fun. Im putting christopher kane stuff on her and hes got some crazy stuff, so its perfect. I like that she had really wide shoulders and thought she would look good in some of the sleeveless dresses ( as well as bright 80s colored one, btw... im sorry i dont have color, i promise that ill have these sketches colored) and speaking of color im really not sure how i want to color these. half of me wants to use flat color and the other half wants to use ink and some photoshop. anyways some imput would be nice!

I found alot of Chisato's clothes that I really fell in love with, though not all of it is things that seemed to go along with Audrey, so I went through a bunch of images from her past collections (what I'm showng here is mainly spring '06 & '07) culling what seemed most "Audrey" to me. : ) There was a cool fall line a few seasons back, but I think because I'm feeling springy what with the cherry blossoms and all, I wanted to go more in that direction.

Hello Sensualists.

So thanks again for all your hard work. It was really great getting a chance to see what you are up to. You're a talented group, and I really had a wonderful time. For those of you who are interested in the Photo Shop transparent line trick:

1: Scan you artwork in. If you didn't scan it in as greyscale, convert it to greyscale.
2: Adjust the levels and contrast as you see fit. Remember, that you can see the pure whites and blacks in Levels, by holding down the option key while clicking on the white or black triangle/slider respectively.
3: Use the burn and doge tools if you want to adjust the lightness or darkness of the image in particular place. Great if you want to lighten or darken delicate, precise areas.
4:Got into the Channels palette. If you are in greyscale, which you should be, you should see one channel, label "Grey."
5: Load the channel, by either "apple" clicking the channel, or clicking on the small circle of dots at the bottom of the Channels palette.
6: Go back into the layers palette, and make a new layer. We'll call this layer "Line" for now.
7: Invert the selection. You can do this by pressing Apple+Shift+I OR by going up to "Select" in the menu and choosing "Inverse."
8: Make sure you're on the "Line"layer. Fill the layer with black.
9: Delete the layer underneath "Line" which is probably called "background".
10: Deselect the selection by going into "Select" and clicking on "Deselect." OR by pressing Apple+D.
11: You should now have transparent greyscale artwork on a transparent background.
12: Turn the colour mode to RGB or CMYK if you will be working on the picture in colour.
13: You can "lock transparency" by clicking on the small checkerboard button to the right of the word "Lock:" on the layers palette, which will allow you to colour the line by either filling the entire layer with colour, or by using a brush over top of it.

I'm going to keep checking out the blog, and am looking forward to seeing what you do for Kris. I want to see her getting all frustrated because everyone is drawing too big! If anyone has any questions, feel free to E-mail me. Good luck, and stay in touch.

Here's my sketch for the cd cover. I ended up going with my favorite genre, so I'll be doing Electronica/Ambient (bands like Múm and Massive Attack). After drawing the girl and cityscape, I went hunting on style.com for an outfit I thought adequately matched the mood and sound of the music (as well as my image) and decided on the dress above.

As for the two versions; I initially colored the gray/green one, but wasn't sure if everyone might think it was too dull, so I color balanced a blue as well. I personally enjoy the gray/green more since it's what I initially had in mind (plus I think it might fit better with the genre) but I'm interested to see what you guys think. Thanks for all your work, some of these are starting to look pretty good. I'm going to avoid commenting on anything specificly for now, as I think it will be more useful to save what I have to say for class. Please bring along all your sketches, including small thumbnails you may not have posted to the blog. As well, it would be very helpful for me if everyone could bring along a few finished pieces; things they have completed for this or other classes. The more the better, as I would really like to have a sense of where the sketches are going when I talk about them tomorrow.

On a more general note, in regards to what has been posted so far, the type and lettering is for the most part really painful. If you are going to include it in your image, and I think it's great if you are planning to do so, you really need to give it as much consideration as you would the image and concept. If anyone is inclined to spend some more time on this before tomorrow, I would encourage you to think about the type and lettering a little more seriously. As it stands right now, with a few exceptions, it's all looking a little too much like grade 4 science fair lettering.

I spent most of my time trying to redesign the Ariel character this week. I'm going for this hipster/David Bowie from Labyrinth/80's glam/Classical Greek and Roman antiquity sort of feel. This is the only page that turned out coherent enough to show. Point of interest; I'm left handed, so the first one I drew is the farthest one to the right.

This is my first revamped poster idea. I want to make it clear that those are not the fonts that I would actually go with; I'd do all the text by hand in the final, this is just a placeholder for the sketch

I'm still not quite happy with the way these are turning out; I'll probably have more sketches to show some time before class. Androgyny just isn't what I'm used to drawing.

There are some nice sketches here. You are a talented group with a lot of great drawing ability. I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone refines their images and concepts.

I was a little disappointed to see so many robes, capes, cloaks, and dresses, for those of you that gave some thought to costume and setting at all. Although I'm by no means suggesting that you should stear away from this type of reference material, I wish I would have seen something a little more varied. Why not King Leare as an aging Chinese Emporor, Iago in an Armani suit, or Hermia and Lysander in Italian Fascist uniforms? I'm not trying to pick on anyone in particular or suggest where things should go, and I know that some plays lend themselves better than others to being re-contextualized, but it would be nice to see you guys break away from the stereotypes a little more. As you continue to develop your work, the type of visual references you are interested in drawing will become an integral part of your own visual vocabulary. I guess I'd like to see some of this stuff feel a little more personal and less like Shakespeare imagery I've seen before.

Also, I think you could all benefit from trying some weirder, less literal ideas. It's important to make sense and be clear, but I'd love to see you at least think about approaching things from a slightly less straightforward angle. You could hire Allen Cober to draw a power drill, write the word "Hamlet" above it, and have a really great, intriguing poster. Interesting things happen when you put words next to pictures, and although I'm by no means trying to suggest that this relieves you of your responsibility towards the text, on a project like this you should really feel free to try anything. Why not draw animals instead of people, set the whole scene underwater, draw someone on fire, dress someone entirely in fruit, put weird masks on everyone, draw the whole cast as puppets/dolls, use characters from 8-bit nintendo games, draw the scene in a morgue, or in space?? I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself here, and some of these thoughts would probably make awful posters. My point is that if you can do anything, why not at least try something out of the ordinary? Something that amuses you or that you've been dieing to draw.

I think for the most part everyone has drawn images that are very naturalistic. Playing with scale and distortion could possibly make a lot of your ideas more interesting. I understand the desire to create a picture that "makes sense," but keep in mind that there is no reason you have obey perspective, anatomy, or lighting if breaking those rules makes a more interesting image.

I know you guys are on break now, but don't feel married to these ideas. Scrap everything if you aren't happy with it, and feel free to try something else if you feel inspired, as I certainly won't hold anyone to what has already been shown.

The Tempest

I'm doing The Tempest. Not much to say really: a guy who lives on an island and creates storms with magic in order to enact the revenge he's peen plotting for twelve years.

I'm not quite pleased with the clothes I settled on for this second one, but I ran out of time and just had to upload them. I would have had these up sooner but I had a hell of a time deciding what kind of clothes an ambiguously gendered spirit would wear.

(I went with velvet)

Admittedly not a lot of actual fashion in my sketches this week...I got more into the mindset of representing the play than reinventing it. We have an extra week though, so I'll do more of those over break.

much ado about nothing

hey so here are my rough sketch ideas for a "much ado about nothing" poster. the first idea is benedick and beatrice doing a kind of dance/duel thing with masks - circling each other with wit and words, hiding identities, pretending to be who they're not... all those themes. the second idea is beatrice and benedick 'overhearing' the other characters talking about the other's secret love for him or her - the title/words are big and between them... separating them from each other the way they use put downs to distance themselves from each other and yet words/eavesdropping bring them together... i'm thinking of drawing the text to look like lettered topiary or like holes cut into a tall hedge... the third idea was to make the text in a hedge maze pattern - like the maze like twists and turns in the play (and from the movie, the eavesdropping and celebration that takes place in the garden/hedges) - making the text and pattern central and maybe putting small figures in there somewhere? the fourth idea is something about a tree hung with masks... there's a scene in the movie/play where a masked ball is thrown and people pretend to be others as well as generally hiding their identities... in the movie there's a fountain/urn/planter with a bare vine/shrub in it hung with lots of masks, too... where i got the idea.

So I did Othello. The first thumbnail I was thinking about showing Desdemona at the end of the play after Othello has killed her. I tried to make the hair spell out Othello, still need to make it more legible.
the last two rough, rough, rough, thumbnails I was trying to show Iago and his role in the play. I wanted to incorporate a spider to hint at his evil intentions and sort of a play on the idea of "spinning a web" which is essentially what he does with the other characters. I think I like the one where the spider hangs down and becomes part of his eye better. let me know what you guys think.

Taming of the Shrew

So I was thinking a lot about that movie that came out with Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, "Ten Things I Hate About You." Mainly because it was based on "Taming of the Shrew," and also because I kind of really loved that movie.

Also, I scanned a million times another sketch that I had done. But everytime it would download to the computer it would be diagonal and cut off.

The fonts will be typed...not drawn out like they are now.

I did the taming of the shrew. Here are a couple of my ideas so far, along with a sample of text i was thinking about using. In the first image, Petruccio is trying to "tame" Katherine persay. In the second image, I tried to combine the shrew with the idea of disguise. Don't know how well these are working, so any feedback would be appericated!

So i wanted to macbeth since its all dark and scary. It was also my favorite play out of everything i read by shakespeare.
My first idea is from the part where la. Ive been looking at some japanese prints and stuff.

this is the general idea. the handwritten text will be cleaner, the hands in a different position and i would make her face a little more psychotic.

i think covering her face with her hair could work too.
i need something in the background.

Emma's Shakespeare Sketches

Here are two ideas that I had, maybe you can help me figure out what direction to head in, as these are from different plays. The One with the group gathered about the frozen woman is A Winters Tale ( the scene from the very end of the play, and the 2nd is taken from Tempest- the bit at the beginning where Ariel "Flamed amazement" on the ship, before they all get washed ashore...so,as to the posting dates etc, I will be gone (gone as in not being able to have comp./scanning access) for the whole break starting Sat. early morning...so not sure what to say about all the posting requirements, I hope it's ok, and everyone will understand, but I won't be back until next Mon. a.m. when we have our next class. So my thoughts for this went first to Iago who's one of my favorite literary characters. He's evil and manipulative and two-faced which is where my ideas went to. The first one is a lot more likeable to me and the second one is a little generic I think. I'm also having a little trouble thinking of how to handle the type so any suggestions would be great!

During high school I had read Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello and A Midsummer Night's Dream; but for some reason I really didn't feel like drawing a poster of those. So I came home for break, borrowed King Lear from a friend and read it in one sitting yesterday. It was pretty exciting. I initially only had the first two pieces as my separate ideas but I kept thinking about a combination of them, so I threw a third in as well. I know the fonts are still pretty unresolved and faint, but hopefully these will do. =) And as always, any feedback is super appreciated.

Shakespeare Poster

Specifics:

Create a poster for one of Shakespeare’s plays. Although it should feel usable, it does not have to be purely functional. Consider type placement and the possible use of hand lettering to enhance the poster. Above all else, I’m interested in seeing an interesting, compelling image.

Size: 12x18, full colour.

Sketches: first set due this Saturday 3rd of March, on the blog(at least 2, preferably three, different directions). Revised sketches due on the 10th on the blog. We’ll talk about them in class on the 12th.

Final Art: Due on the 19th in class.

Some things to consider:

How does setting effect your concept, is it historical, a fusion of different places and time periods, or something wholly imagined?

Will your poster be bold and graphic with a strong iconic image, complex and detailed, or a combination of the two?

Can you use a conceptual image to tell the story or will you be more narrative in the way you present your ideas?

Think about what some of the plays underlying messages and themes are, and how they might effect what is going on visually within the piece. Is jealousy a strong reoccurring element within the story, revenge, or love? How will these ideas effect the various elements that will make up your image?

And don’t forget all that great research you have been doing in your past projects. Although it shouldn’t be all you present, I’d love to see any source material you are using.

I'm really into ye grande old fashioned way of travel. I've been thinking about Dorothy Sayers, The Orient Express, Hat boxes, and those sticker thingies that people used to plaster on luggage. Also all the american expats that went off in search of different climes between thew world wars, also Henry James characters who did the same thing only a little earlier ( but I'm not sure if it is ok to go back that far in time?) The photo is of F. Scott Fitzgerald's family heading off probably to the Riviera. I was also kind of playing about with the idea of framing the piece(s) as a kind of passport book page(s) with ephemera and fashionable travel scenes sort of stuck inside...

cigarettes?

I apologize for my lateness first off. What I'm thinking of with this are the designs on old cigarette packages from around the world. Especially those that feature different landscapes like the pyramids of Giza or the Amazon or other random destinations. There's a few I'm looking at with planes or ships on them as well and I'm thinking they'd translate pretty well into tickets or postcards particularly with a travel theme in mind. And of course, just the designs are what I'm looking at not campaigning for cigarettes, I would change the text to whatever the details for the fashion show are. Maybe make the designs reminiscent of cigarette packages but a little more modern also? Oh and yeah, I have no models in these and I wasn't sure if that was a requirement or not. i guess it would make sense if it would be, but I'm a little unsure about how I'd incorporate them. Any ideas?

so... when i think of travel... i think of all the stupid advertisements, posters, calenders and postcards that my dad's friends have of Jamaica of all these semi-nude women walking out of the water, women carrying fruit on their heads, maps, and lots and lots of donkeys carrying stuff... soo... its gonna be somewhere along the lines of combining all of these things... (ohh yess...and i wanted to keep it looking very 70's ish in the design/outfits for the girls... as well as including some stamps overlayed on it... sort of like a combination of a travel advertisement and a passport...)

hey um i don't know if i'm misunderstanding the assignment or what but i started designing overall looks for paper advertising paraphenalia for the show like a poster, a ticket, and a program... so i was making these mock ups in illustrator of world maps, old train tickets, and paper luggage tags (and i was thinking 'itineraries' or travel schedules for the show program...). but now i'm confused... i wasn't even planning on using figures in my illustrations. is what i'm doing ok or should i really be illustrating people in settings... since this IS fashion illustration?

here are my sketches... one of my ideas which was pretty flat and designy was to have a model wearing clothes with the background having flat images of different cities behind them, which could include different landmarks. Another idea, kinda similar to Taryn's was to have clothing that mimics different ways to travel (such as this girls ballooning dress with the same pattern applied to the hot airballoon). My third idea is for a possible ticket into the show. It could be like a boaring pass to an airplane, and could feature the different designers of the show clothing on the pass.

Ok. For my travel theme I was planning on doing different girls traveling around, but in rain. I believe most people think of rain as a negative aspect about traveling, but I thought it might be a cute idea to try and show a more fashion oriented and fun side to it. As of now, I was planning on drawing loose backgrounds of locations and keeping them in muted shades (maybe sepia?) and keeping the girls with umbrellas in color. I'm thinking of backgrounds similar to the first and second picture, models more like the third. I'm afraid my idea's not quite cohesive enough though, so any suggestions would be much appreciated. =)

These are some sketches I did for this week. I'm thinking about doing them with a vintage postcard look, with bright colors like early photographs that had to be hand colored. I was kind of thinking about simple ideas like girls dressed up in clothes that resemble things about the different places, such as the Eiffle tower or volcanoes for Hawaii.

Hi everybody, I'm currently being laid waste by a cold. I was really sad not to get to see what people had done. I wasn't going to post my finals because I had intended to just wake up Mon. and bring them in, but then when that turned out impossible I thought that I could use the blog to be able to show off my hard work and not feel like it was for naught : ( Also, it's nice to get to glimpse what you guys did. If any one wants to upload their pieces, I 'd love to see them, gives me something else to think about other than being sick! As for these images, I chose to go with an entirely different frame for the Amelie- on- her -own pose after going through the film again, and thinking about what was said in the crit. Also, the cafe scene got lowered to include more of the jacket and I tried to incorporate the colors of the movie in to the illustrations more than I had.
If I could be updated about our next assignment that would be great, I'm barely able to move, but Knowing wht the homework is couldn't hurt! Hope everyone else is stayin' healthy.

i apologize for the crappy image quality. my scanner dulls my images down alot.

This is watercolor without the color pencil.
An im not sure if you can see it, but this is water color with color pencil lines.

my scanner seems to dull things down alot so i up the contrast which is making my piece look more high contrast than it is.anyways this is the final that im working on but im not sure how if i should use the color pencil to outline the figures.

bahh ... didnt get as much work done on the sketches as i wanted to... i never got to see the movie (limewire is taking FOREVER to dL the movie, youtube only has clips of small parts of it, and a contusion to my knee kept me from leaving my apartment since thursday) ANYWAY. here are my ideas... i wanted to give it a sort of punk-y disco-y theme...

these are clothing sources: elaine's 'wedding dress', michael in suits, mrs. robinson - maybe add some detail to her stockings.

i had a hard time finding good scenes and poses to display clothing on bodies. although i love the movie, the actors were in bed/not clothed for half of it and a lot of shots were cropped at the waist or were close up head shots. in addition to the four scenes i chose, i thought the scene in the pool - just floating on blue water wearing shorts and sunglasses and holding a can of beer and the scene where michael is in the chapel pounding on the glass shouting 'elaine! elaine!' were pivotal scenes but not very good for drawing clothes on people. what do you think? should i still try to illustrate these scenes or should i just move ahead with two of the ones i've posted?

I'm thinking of doing these with tissue paper in select places (like the clothes) and leaving the reast of the scene in black and white or sepia tones since there's so much inky darkness in the movies. I'm going to stick to the colors in the photos. I aslo will make my lines cleaner and my blacks more graphic.

The suit here is for the sketch with Michael in his study, but for some reason is here. Go figure.

Logan's Run is a crazy movie

but I love it. I'm planning on using gouache and ink for this and would like to be pretty loose, but maybe the sketches as they are right now are too messy to make out. I want to push the bright colors for the finals and also have a lot more geometric shapes perhaps. I'm a little confused about what exactly we're supposed to change about the scenes though. We need to change the characters into different people and also their clothing, is that right? If that's the case, I need to research some outfits..
